Da quello che mi risulta fu la prima esperienza di intervento organizzato, all’interno di un primo importante abbozzo di quello che sono diventati i Piani attuali di Protezione civile.
Una partenza in tempi rapidi per il soccorso di emergenza, contemporaneamente un lavoro di allestimento, con partenze distribuite nei momenti successivi di colonne di mezzi per l’allestimento di campi di accoglienza per gli sfollati, di viveri e generi di prima necessità.
A quei tempi la Protezione Civile come siamo abituati a sentirne parlare ora, non esisteva. L’allora Presidente del Consiglio Cossiga aveva forse ben altro a cui pensare poiché la presenza dello Stato nelle zone colpite dal Sisma si percepì solo dopo qualche giorno. Quello che invece era reale in quell’immensa catastrofe erano i tentativi di sciacallaggio e la volontà della mafia di appropriarsi dei soccorsi.
Avevamo installato come Pubbliche Assistenze un Campo base a Grottaminarda, proprio al confine di quell’area enorme colpita dal Sisma. Ricordo che quando percorrevamo con l’autoambulanza le strade per giungere all’Ospedale di S.Angelo dei Lombardi, colpito dal terremoto ma diventato ospedale base per il trasferimento dei feriti in altre strutture fuori regione, lo spettacolo di quelle che furono meravigliose colline era spaventoso. Interi paesi, frazioni, gruppi di abitazioni completamente rasi al suolo come se fosse esploso un ordigno nucleare.
