Per queste sue qualità nel passato è stato usato in quantità inimmaginabili. Nel XX secolo, in tutto il mondo, ne sono state accumulate 173 milioni di Tonnellate.


Fu impiegato per una moltitudine di usi quali: piastre isolanti per ferri da stiro, guanti da forno, schermi cinematografici, carrozze ferroviarie. Ed ancora: Teatri, Cinema, Scuole coibentate con amianto spruzzato sulle pareti.Da una ricerca di Legambiente su 94 Capoluoghi di Provincia il 12% delle scuole contiene ancora amianto. La sua economicità faceva sbizzarrire la fantasia di tantissime aziende, in particolare quelle legate all’edilizia che realizzavano coperture dei tetti in lastre piane o ondulate con una mistura di amianto e cemento.

Quando questo materiale, chiamato ETERNIT, è in buono stato di conservazione ha la caratteristica di non essere friabile quindi non eccessivamente pericoloso. Se, però, lo stesso viene esposto ad agenti atmosferici, subisce un progressivo degrado dovuto a piogge, sbalzi termici, vento e, a distanza di anni dall’installazione possono verificarsi rilasci di fibre. Le fibre di amianto,liberate nell’aria possono essere causa di gravi malattie dell’apparato breathing.

Credo che sia importante invece riaffermare un principio fondamentale:
